Now that I am on the cusp of Medicare, the concept of retirement has taken on a completely new meaning. Since I can remember, for me retiring was always associated with work, and saving, and getting older - to reach a point in my life when I could sit back, watch the sun rise and not have to deal with the early morning commute grind. No boss, no payroll, no pressure, just. . . whatever.
With all that's going on in the world, our economy, and our dollar, retirement has taken on a new meaning. There are fewer gold watches and parties - once 65 seemed like a wonderful and comforting point of reference, the begininning of that final chapter that would complete the life cycle. Yet for many, 65 or even 55, can be a daunting reality that retirement may never be or at least never what we had in mind. Did we save enough, did we save at all, can we afford to stop working, will our ability to find a job, full-time or part-time take a back seat to a younger, $cheaper generation, or can we find something to do that will keep us involved on our terms and for how long.
